What Should Parents Do During Music Lessons?
Supporting your child's musical journey—without wondering if you're doing it "right."One question we hear from many parents is:

"What should I do while my child is in lessons?"

Should you stay?
Run errands?
Watch every lesson?
Read a book in the lobby?

There isn't one right answer.
Every family is different, and we're happy for you to do what works best for your schedule. More important than where you spend the hour is knowing how you can best support your child's musical journey.
Sometimes the Best Learning Happens Independently
As parents, it's natural to want to help.

But one of the wonderful things about music lessons is that they give children an opportunity to develop confidence and independence on their own.
As students begin reading music, solving problems, and making musical decisions for themselves, they discover something powerful:

"I can do this."

Those moments of independence are an important part of becoming a musician—and they often happen when children are given the space to learn, think, and grow on their own.
You're Always Welcome
Whether you choose to stay or head out during the lesson, we want you to feel welcome.

Some parents enjoy reading or working in the lobby.
Some run errands.
Others like to watch a lesson from time to time.
All of these are perfectly fine.

Our goal is simply to create an environment where both students and families feel comfortable.
We Invite You to Peek In Occasionally
Even if you don't watch every lesson, we encourage parents to occasionally spend a few minutes observing.

You'll likely notice things your child would never think to mention afterward.
  • The encouragement from a teacher.
  • Students working independently.
  • A rhythm game that reinforces music reading.
  • Friends celebrating one another's successes.
  • A child quietly solving a musical challenge without being given the answer.

Those moments help tell the story of what's happening inside the lesson.
Your Child May Not Tell You Everything They Learned
After lessons, many conversations sound something like this:

"How was piano?"

"Good."
"What did you do?"
"I don't know."

Children are wonderful learners, but they aren't always great reporters.
They often remember the activity...
"We played a game."

...without realizing the game was teaching rhythm, listening, or music reading.

Sometimes the most important learning isn't the easiest learning to describe.
The Best Thing You Can Do
You don't need to become your child's music teacher.

You don't need to know all the answers.
One of the greatest gifts you can give is simple encouragement.
Celebrate effort.
Celebrate perseverance.
Celebrate the joy of making music.

And if you're ever curious about your child's progress, ask us.
We love sharing what we're seeing and celebrating those milestones with you.
We're Partners in Your Child's Musical Journey
Parents play an important role—not by teaching lessons at home, but by encouraging, supporting, and celebrating their child's growth.

Together, we can help your child build confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of music.
